The way Laplink works is fairly straightforward. You have to install the software on both the PCs you want to communicate with; make sure it's running on both; and then get connected. You can hook up the computers using parallel or serial cables (provided in the box), a modem, a USB cable, wireless devices (infrared), an office network or the internet.

Using a direct cable connection is the most trouble-free way to connect, and it works a treat. When we moved into the realm of modems, networks or the internet, we needed to do a bit of configuring. However, Laplink provides helpful wizards and advice along the way to ease the process.

Once Laplink was running and connected we were impressed by its capabilities. We easily took control of the remote test computer's entire operation, from simple cut-and-paste actions from one PC to another, to operating full programmes such as Word. Laplink will only transmit changed portions of files, making for more efficient running.

We even opened up an email programme, had it dial up an internet service provider, then download, read and reply to the email - all from a remote PC. Laplink will also allow you to redirect your print jobs to the printer of a local or remote PC. The software has built-in security to prevent unauthorised users from accessing your PC.
