Perplexing purple treasure hunt in London

Game on

Written by Dinah Greek, Computeract!ve

A treasure hunt is taking place in London this Saturday as part of the new reality cult game, Perplex City.

Perplex city is a global puzzle game played online in the first instance, with players buying packages of cards for £2.50 from Firebox. Each package contains six cryptic games or puzzles which, once solved, provides the player with clues towards helping the people of PerplexCity recover a cube.

Players enter their solutions online and receive a certain number of points, depending on the difficulty of the card. But the idea behind the game is that people not only get involved with the story and fictional characters, but have to work together and share information to find the eventual treasure.

So this virtual world spills quickly into the real world with interlinked clues appearing in baffling websites, coded newspaper ads, TV clips, cryptic phone calls, and urban treasure hunts around the world such as this one in London

Many of the puzzles can only be solved by the collective and collaborative efforts of people going out and interacting with each other face-to-face, making it more sociable than most virtual world games.

During this latest hunt, people will work together to track down "a dangerous organisation" by solving intricate puzzles and clues. A few prizes will be on offer but the aim is to get nearer solving the ultimate mystery of where the treasure is buried and ultimately win the £100,000 prize.

If people don’t turn up, they will be reliant on the people who did sharing information with them. Other treasure hunts around the UK are also planned but the Perplex City Academy is giving out few clues as to where and when or even what will happen on Saturday.

It said people should just expect the unexpected and all that is needed for Saturday's hunt is "a sharp intellect, quick legs and most importantly, imagination" – oh and wear something purple.

Anyone can take part and the location is:
Clapham Common - North East Corner, at the corner of Long Road and Clapham Common South Side

* Date: Saturday 22nd October
* Time: 2pm - 5pm
* Cost: Nothing
* Dress code: Wear something purple!
