Most multifunction devices (MFDs) that make their way into our labs are inkjet models.
They’re great for photo prints, but not so impressive when it comes to running costs. Enter the Konica Minolta Pagepro 1380MF.
It is restricted to mono output, but this is more than made up for with fast printing and copying, and low running costs.
The 1380MF is reasonably compact for an MFD, preferring height over depth. It hooks up to your PC via USB2 only and the software is easy to install and use.
There are the usual options for printing several pages on one sheet or adding a watermark, and the driver software is well designed.
The printer claims a speed of 20ppm (pages per minute), with a similar copying speed. Our tests showed this to be fairly accurate at 18ppm when printing a test pdf file.
The quality of text output was good, as we’d expect from a laser, and readable even right down to 2pt. Scanning is also quick: it took us 26 seconds to scan an A4 page at 300dpi.
The auto document feeder is useful and immediately makes the 1380MF more versatile than most inkjet devices. The scanning options are equally flexible: you can scan direct to an application from the device itself.
The 1380MF has a duty cycle of 15,000 pages per month, which should be more than enough for home and small-business purposes. The toner cartridge supplied will provide around 1,500 pages.
Replacement toner is available in 3,000 and 6,000-page cartridges, priced £47 and £77 respectively. The photoelectric drum lasts for 20,000 pages and costs £58 to replace.
If you’re not fussed about colour output, the Pagepro 1380MF is a decent multifunction laser printer at a good price.
