Philips is taking on Apple's Nano, launching its own miniature music player and photo viewer.

The GoGear SA9200 measures just 9cm long and weighs 48g. Its 2GB memory can store around 500 mp3 files or 560 photos. Images are displayed on a 1.7in screen and the player's menu system can be accessed via a touch-sensitive screen.

Philips claims the SA9200 can run for 14 hours before needing a recharge and features various equalizer settings.

It sports Microsoft's PlayForSure logo, which means DRM-encrypted WMA files will be supported. A 1GB model – the SA9100 – will also be available alongside the SA9200 in October. They will be priced around €149 (£100) and €199 (£134) respectively.

The SA9200 will also go up against Sandisc's planned player, announced today. Its Sansa c200 has 2GB of flash memory, a claimed battery life of 20 hours and can also play video.

Look out for a review later in the year.
