Digital photos take up a good deal of space, depending on their resolution,
but typically 1 to 3MB each.
You notice this particularly when you want to upload pictures to one of these
online photo services. The speed of a broadband connection is essential, but
even then a medium-sized batch of photos can take a considerable time to upload.
This process can be speeded up by reducing the file size before you send
them. Don’t reduce the image dimensions (in pixels) as this will visibly reduce
the quality if you order prints. Instead, save copies of images as high- or
medium-quality
Jpegs.
These will often produce smaller files than your camera generated originally.
Don’t, however, save originals in the Jpeg format as these lose quality each
time they are saved because of the compression process.
