Playlists are the best way to appreciate a large collection of music on a computer but creating them takes time. The Filter can create playlists from just two initial tracks to keep the same feel and style.

The Filter can be used to suit a particular mood or the playlists saved for particular times such as going to the gym or travelling. The playlists can be used with iPods.

Not only does this approach take the pain out of creating playlists but it can pick up old favourites that have been forgotten.

The Filter works by reading the information in the music track tags and comparing it with information held on a community server. This information is used to find similar tracks for the playlist.

Registration is needed to use The Filter. An anonymous account can be used for up to seven days.

At present The Filter is only available for iTunes on Windows. A Mac version is in development.
