OQO launches tiny handheld PC

Tiny PC specialist OQO has launched a new version of its flagship product: the OQO model e2.

This tiny PC measures just 142x84x26mm, so it’s not that much bigger than some smartphones, but it runs the full version of Windows Vista Ultimate.

The e2 has a 5” display with a resolution of 800x480 pixels. Sliding this up reveals a QWERTY keyboard designed to be operated using your two thumbs. A touch stick control under your right thumb moves the mouse pointer, with left and right-click buttons placed to sit under your left thumb.

Inside, there’s a 1.5GHz or 1.6GHz processor, 1GB of memory and a large hard disk: models range from 60GB to 120GB depending on the price. A special version with a 32GB solid state hard disk – which is far less sensitive to damage from shocks – is also available.

The e2 has a HDMI port, making it easy to connect to a HDTV or monitor, and an adapter included in the box gives users a network socket and standard VGA monitor output. Wireless networking and Bluetooth are included with all models.

OQO claims that the e2’s standard battery will run for around three hours of use, or three days in standby. A larger battery, available separately, allows it to run for twice as long. The company is also selling a smart-looking docking station that includes a DVD drive, and which makes it easy to use the e2 as a desktop PC.

The OQO model e2 will go on sale tomorrow morning at Expansys. Prices start from £1,149 for a model with a 1.5GHz processor and 60GB hard disk.
