DOSBox

Play classic DOS games

Tim Smith, vnunet.com 21 May 2007

Many old DOS games will not play on Windows XP, and if you are running a different operating system to Windows it can be even harder. DOSBox is a DOS emulator so the old software can run in a window.

The interface is rather basic and you have to manually mount folders to use their contents. There are links on the DOSBox website for various front end programs that you can use to make setting up DOSBox much easier.

DOSBox can also record videos of the gameplay with a simple keypress; Ctrl, Alt and F5 starts and stops recording. The files needed to play the video (known as codec) are supplied with DOSBox.

If you have any old DOS software that you thought could no longer be used, think again, as DOSBox will give them a new lease of life.

In order to download DOSBox, you will have to select a site to download from the list of available mirrors. DOSBox for alternative operating systems can be found on the DOSBox Project download page
