PC help: Invisible PCI Card

Fitting and detecting a PCI Card

Tim Smith and Anthony Dhanendran, Computeract!ve 04 May 2007

Q I recently bought a TV card to fit inside the computer using a PCI slot.

I made sure I was earthed so as not to damage the card, but on restarting the computer Windows could not detect the new card so the installation software will not work.

A Sadly fitting a card inside the computer is not as straightforward as it might seem. The first thing to try is moving the card to another free PCI slot in the computer. These are white and around three inches long.

If there are coloured slots as well as white, be sure to only use the white ones. The slots may otherwise look the same but have different purposes. If the computer has Windows Media Center installed, it is important to ensure the TV card is a compatible model. You can find a list on the Microsoft website.
