PC help: Can't shut down

Error linked to camera software

Tim Smith and Anthony Dhanendran, Computeract!ve 07 Feb 2008

Q Recently, my computer, which has been working quite normally otherwise, has started to act up when I try to shut it down.

A message appears on the screen saying: “PTAWIA needs to shut down or is being shut down” and I can’t close it without great difficulty.

Usually, it’s a case of opening the Task Manager and closing the error message from there. Only then can the computer continue to shut down properly. Is there any way to clean it up?

A This is a problem caused by certain versions of Kodak’s Easyshare camera software. The letters WIA in PTAWIA refer to the drivers used by scanners and digital cameras to talk to Windows.

The easiest way to get rid of the error message is to uninstall the Kodak software.

Open the Control Panel from the Start menu and select ‘Add or Remove Programs’.

In the window that appears, scroll down until you find the Kodak Easyshare software and click Remove, then follow the prompts to uninstall it.

If you have a Kodak camera, you will still be able to copy photos from it using the software included with Windows, or using third-party software such as Adobe Photoshop Elements.

Alternatively, if you want to continue using the Easyshare software, download the latest version from www.kodak.com, but be aware that this might not cure the problem.
