or "How much does your mobile phone provider know about you?"
German Green party politician Malte Spitz decided to find out just what his mobile phone provider knew about him.
He took Deutsche Telekom to court and was able to get the records the company had on him. There was quite a lot of data: between August 31, 2009 and February 28, 2010, Mr Spitz's location was recorded 35,000 times.
The New York Times article on Mr Spitz [registration required] is a fascinating read. "We are all walking around with little tags, and our tag has a phone number associated with it, who we called and what we do with the phone," the paper quotes Sarah E. Williams, an expert on graphic information at Columbia University's architecture school, as saying. "We don't even know we are giving up that data."
German newspaper Die Zeit has the full story in English along with a more detailed visualisation of all the data, in German. The full data is available in a Google Docs spreadsheet.
