Video: HTC's widescreen Android smartphone

High-definition video camera, video calling and fast processor for the HTC Sensation

HTC Sensation

Smartphone maker HTC has unveiled its latest handset, the HTC Sensation, which will use the Google-backed Android operating system.

The HTC Sensation handset is made from aluminium and has a 4.3in widescreen display in the 16:9 aspect ratio.

There are two cameras: on the back is an eight-megapixel one that can also shoot high-definition video in the 1080p resolution, while on the front of the phone there is a 1.3-megapixel camera for face-to-face video chatting. The HTC Sensation uses a 1.2GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor.

HTC has also revamped its HTC Sense user interface to add some new features. The lock screen is customisable so that, for instance, unlocking the phone can make it launch certain tasks such as sending an email or making a phone call. HTC Sensation will also include a new piece of software called HTC Watch, a movie-rental and buying service that lets users watch video clips while they are still downloading.

HTC's chief executive Peter Chou said that smartphones were now "pocket-sized entertainment centres" and that the Sensation would be "a powerful, evolved multimedia smartphone"

The HTC Sensation will be available in the UK on the Vodafone network, though the launch date and pricing are yet to be confirmed.

The phone handset was on display at the Expansys stand at the Gadget Show in Birmingham. You'll find a complete list of our show reports on our Gadget Show Live blog.
