Hauppauge takes on Slingbox with release of TV and video streaming product
Hauppauge is taking on Slingbox with the release of its Broadway streaming product.
The Hauppauge Broadway 2T can stream television programmes and other video across a home network and across the internet, allowing users to view television programmes and clips on any computer.
The device includes two DVB-T tuners which allow it to receive Freeview channels (though not the newer Freeview HD channels). It also has inputs for s-video and composite inputs along with a USB socket to which a hard disk can be connected, from which video files can be streamed. The USB socket can also accept a webcam for remote viewing.
It supports two outputs, so two people can watch at the same time, or one channel can be recorded while another is being watched.
In addition to sending the video to any computer running Hauppauge's software, the Broadway can also send it to an iPad or iPhone using a web-based service. The company expects to support Android handsets and tablets as well within the next couple of weeks.
As with similar products, it can stream television and other video outside the user's home, but this may require the user to make some adjustments to their router settings.
The Hauppauge Broadway 2T is expected to cost £229 and will be available towards the end of April. It was being shown off at the Gadget Show Live 2011 in Birmingham and is available there at a special show price of £160.
