Tweet your current location and expected arrival time
Another day at IFA and we've been looking at the latest sat-nav from TomTom. The TomTom Live Go 1015, which will initially only be available in Germany, the USA and New Zealand, includes features from Trip Advisor, Expedia, Yelp and Twitter.
Each service works like a smartphone app. Launching the Expedia app gave an option to search for hotels nearby or near a planned destination. Only hotels with rooms still available will be displayed. It is also possible to view reviews of restaurants, hotels and local attractions with the Trip Advisor app, once again these will be localised to your current position.
We also got to look at the new Twitter features. By linking a Twitter account to the sat-nav, a user can post automatic updates on their current location and anticipated time of arrival.
When we asked a TomTom spokesperson how they thought people would use this feature, they told us it would be ideal for letting friends know when you should be arriving. Of course, there's also the issue that you're publishing live updates of your current location on the internet. We were curious as to why Twitter was chosen over Facebook and TomTom told us that it was due to technical reasons.
The new services will be added on top of the existing Live services from TomTom and will only be available in Germany, the USA and New Zealand on an initial trial period. TomTom wouldn't be drawn on when other countries, including the UK, might see the new features.
