How can I install disc-based software on my netbook?

Always check what format supplied software comes in to ensure you can use it

Adding disc-based software to netbook computers can be tricky

I bought a new JVC camcorder from my local Argos store. I have since encountered a problem.

The software to transfer footage to the PC is supplied on disc. But I have a netbook, which has no CD drive. I have been in contact with JVC’s helpline but have had no help.

I first offered to send the disc back in return for an email link to the software, then tried asking for it to be supplied on a memory key. I was refused on the grounds this would be an abuse of the software licence.
Keith Simpson

Mr Simpson’s contract is with Argos and not JVC, so initially his complaint should be directed at this retailer.

Also, although the software for this camcorder has to be fit for purpose, JVC is not legally bound to supply software specifically in a form that Mr Simpson can use.

This means the company does not have to upload the software to the internet so it can be downloaded, nor does it have to supply it on a memory key. If it did the latter, the cost to the company would increase.

Mr Simpson’s netbook does not have a DVD or CD drive and it would have been advisable for him to check the system requirements before making his purchase. He may actually find this small outlay worthwhile in case he wants to add more software to his PC in future.

Alternatively he could always ask a friend, who has a PC with a disc drive to download the software to a memory key he has bought and install it that way.

We asked JVC if it had considered the popularity of devices that can’t use CD or DVDs to install software. The company said it did not, because it did not develop the software and was not the owner.

However, JVC said as a goodwill gesture it will get permission to put this online so Mr Simpson can download it this time.

Video editing on a netbook

What? Video editing on a netbook? Presumably not a first, but I doubt netbooks were originally designed for such a task. Sounds like a job for the good old USB port though via a thumb drive copy perhaps? Next thing you know, tablet owners will moan that they don't have USB ports, only 3G or Wi-FI!
