Simple clear advice in plain English

How long does a free offer last?

Andy Smith replaced his faulty sat nav but didn't use it for a year. He asks if Road Angel should honour the six-month free camera updates, but we think this unlikely

Road Angel's Adventurer 7000 is no longer on sale

About four years ago I bought a Road Angel Adventurer 7000 satellite-navigation device because it allowed me to run my Memory Map Ordnance Survey mapping software for my walks. It included a six-month free subscription to safety camera updates and was £3.99 per month thereafter. A couple of years later the unit started to malfunction.

I bought a new one from a retailer for about £100. However, the old unit righted itself so I never used the replacement. But now that I have decided to use it, I have found Road Angel does not honour this free subscription any more.
Andy Smith

Mr Smith asked us if Road Angel should give him the six-month free subscription even though he has owned his replacement Adventurer for more than a year without using it. We haven’t seen the terms and conditions of this offer, but doubt that Road Angel would have to do this.

When Mr Smith bought the unit he was aware that it was an end-of-line model which is no longer made by Road Angel. Although the company is still offering this GPS service, special offers do have a finite date on them. For example, it is possible this offer was specific to that model of sat nav for only a year or so.

We explained this when we spoke to Mr Smith, but said he could check the terms and conditions closely to see if there were any loopholes that would require Road Angel to honour this offer even now.

Road Angel Classic

Now they prepose to pull the plug on life time subscription holders, saying that it was a premotional offer and that all units will have a finite life.I am alive (lifetime). My classic road angel clearly has a finite life, like everything in the universe. It still works fine.I have left it with my soliciter, and will persue them.
