Check installed software is up-to-date
Secunia Personal Software Inspector checks computers for out of date or vulnerable software
Keeping software up to date is an important part of staying safe online. It prevents problems from being exploited and may offer new features and improvements. The Secunia Personal Software Inspector is a very helpful tool for making this checking as quick and easy as possible.
Once downloaded the Inspector searches for the software installed on the computer and then warns of any that are out of date and need upgrading.
The blue arrow next to the software appears if there is a direct link to an update known to Secunia and the green icon shows that more information is available.
Secunia Personal Software Inspector now has automatic updates, an improved interface and better presented scan results.

C'mon !
PSI is very slow and interface shows screaming errors while displaying threat ratings. Check for yourself ! I have JRE 1.605, that according to their page http://secunia.com/advisories/product/14273/ has 0 unpathched vulnerabilities, however PSI displays all time threat ratings, http://secunia.com/advisories/32991/ . This is stupid, for me it's 3.5/5 stars.

5 star from me
Read about this program in the letters issue 285, as a silver surfer with limited experience I found it did exactly as stated. It identified 5 items of general usage software that needed fixing, and i just followed the guides and went from 95% to 100% in about 15 mins.

PSI maybe more hazardous than helpful
I'm afraid that I have to agree - PSI is slow and error prone. Their "threat rating" it is especially bogus. PSI is not alone in incorrectly identifying threatening programs. I have yet to find any general-purpose utility correctly identify a threatening program. The only purpose this useless function ("threat rating") can serve is to slow down the execution of the program. As I have stated, PSI's execution of its primary function is slow enough already.
