Create brochures and other documents with Scribus
If professional desktop publishing software is out of reach, Scribus is certainly worth a look. As open-source software it can be downloaded and used free.
This latest version includes some very useful new features, including the ability to open Adobe Illustrator files. As many stock illustrations supply files in this format, it's a big step for Scribus. EPS import wasn't perfect but we're glad to see it. Other new import formats include Xfig and WMF.
Colour palettes can be imported form EPS and AI files, and the handling of all colour palettes has been improved.
There are more templates supplied with Scribus compared to previous versions and the New Document window that appears on startup has also been improved. It can open documents from Openoffice Draw but not Microsoft Publisher. Finished projects can be printed or saved as PDF files.
Help is provided in the form of online documentation (well above average) and a user wiki.
Scribus is supplied with most Linux distributions but there are downloads for this operating system as well as MacOS X and OS/2 . It is also strongly recommended that Ghostscript is installed before Scribus.

Scribus
Scribus is excellent software. It does everything I was looking for except "creep", that is automatically adjusting margins to suit lost paper when you fold outer leaves around inner ones. It works on Vista too. Not quite as instictive to use as Adobe products but the help files and tutorials available are first rate

THIS IS A BETA VERSION
this is really a beta version, and the set of instructions that come with it make it sound pretty unstable. Why not just download Serif SE for free - at least you know that it works.
