Create an image of a hard disk and restore individual files
Backup your hard disk at no cost with DriveImage XML
Drive Image XML is a backup program that creates a complete copy of your hard disk – called an image – that can be used to restore a computer in the event of a serious problem. Drive Image XML can also be used to browse these images to recover individual files and folders.
Installation is simple and the software is easy to use. If you are using Windows 7 or Vista you can't just run the software from the Start Menu. Instead, you should right-click on the icon and select Run as administrator.
The home screen lists the different jobs that can be performed with Drive Image XML. As well as the aforementioned backups, Drive Image can be used to restore an image on a different computer or make a copy of a disk to another disk. These tools would be useful when upgrading a hard disk.
A noteable advantage of Drive Image XML is that it uses a technology built into Windows called Volume Shadow Service. It might sound complicated but it makes the process of creating backups much easier as it allows you to backup all the files on a computer without having to reboot. Without this technology the backup can't be made while Windows is running. We still wouldn't recommend doing anything else with the computer while the backup is being made but it is a time saver.
Drive Image XML can also be used with the Windows Task Scheduler to create automatic backups. There are instructions included in Drive Image XML on how to set this up but
The XML in the name refers to the use of XML files to describe the files kept in the backup. This should make it possible to recover files from the backups with software other than Drive Image XML. While there isn't any need to do this at the moment, being locked to a particular company's file format is a concern if you have to recover the backup many years down the line.
Drive Image XML is a good backup program and a great choice if you don't already have an image backup of your computer.

Drive image xml
I have used this excellent software and can highly recommend it. I also have it on my ubcd4win rescue disc. My only criticism is the fact you cannot do incremental backups, though I am being greedy concidering it is for free.

Download working (hopefully)
Hi Sorry to hear you've been having problems with the download. I've just tried it and it appears to be working, possibly a temporary glitch on the hosting server. Kind regards Tim

If I back up all my hard disk, does that mean double the amount on my hard drive, which is currently 75% full?
