Securely deleted unwanted files with Eraser 6

This is the software publisher’s description.

Eraser is an advanced security that enables you to completely remove sensitive data from your hard drive by overwriting it several times with carefully selected patterns.

Most people have some data that they would rather not share with others - passwords, personal information, classified documents from work, financial records, self-written poems, the list can be continued forever.

Perhaps you have saved some of this information on your computer where it is conveniently at your reach, but when the time comes to remove the data from your hard disk, things get a bit more complicated and maintaining your privacy is not as simple as it may have seemed at first.

Your first thought may be that when you 'delete' the file, the data is gone. Not quite, when you delete a file, the operating system does not really remove the file from the disk; it only removes the reference of the file from the file system table.

The file remains on the disk until another file is created over it, and even after that, it might be possible to recover data by studying the magnetic fields on the disk platter surface.

Before the file is overwritten, anyone can easily retrieve it with a disk maintenance or an undelete utility. Eraser makes sure that the files you want to delete and permanently erased.

This is the brand new Eraser 6 and has been two years in development and ships with a new user-interface, Windows 7 support and much more.

We have received some reports of Eraser filling up hard disks during the process of wiping empty space. There is an explaination of this problem on the Eraser forum here. In order to remove traces of previous files, Eraser creates new files to overwrite the old ones. Sometimes it is not able remove these files and folders automatically. This article has advice on how to find and delete these files to restore the free space

Doesn't work on my Windows 7

Keeps crashing on my Windows 7. Glary Utilities (free version) seems the best option, and gives explorer extension too.

Eraser slows down my mouse

Eraser has a bad effect on my mouse, even when I'm not using it but the process is loaded ( icon in system tray). The mouse gets stopped for about a second every few seconds. Is this commonly observed?

Eraser 6

I use XP and also had the problem of the mouse stopping every few seconds while the icon showed in the System Tray. No problem when I 'Exited Eraser'. It was uninstalled within minutes of having been installed.

reduce space on drive

this tool is nice, but testimony from other user that it reduce the space on drive that would cause to reformat to regain the original drive space again. I would like to know if it's true.

Eraser 6 sucks. Use 5.8.8

After using Eraser 5 for years, I downloaded and installed 6.07 for my Win 7. The new version sucks. It doesn't show progress when you erase something, so there's no way of knowing if you actually succeeded except for viewing a small balloon at the end. Also, even when running as administrator, the erase free space doesn't seem to work. Do yourself a favor and use 5.8.8 rather than this version. You can get it at Sourceforge.

Download problems

Hi I've checked the download button in Firefox and IE and it seems to be working in both. Just one thought, IE showed the message in Information bar (between the tabs and the webpage) saying that the download has been blocked. Click on that message to see the option to download the file. IE does that with some sites. Hope that answers the question Kind regards Tim Computeractive

Loss of Hard Drive Space

I downloaded and used Eraser following the Hints and Tips in ComputerActive Issue 341 and it stopped working and has left me with an almost full hard drive now. I had used about 25% of 500 GB and now have only 1.7GB of free space showing. How do I recover from this bad situation without saving everything and re-formatting my hard drive to recover the 'lost' space. I hope that there is a way.

Downloading Program

Despite previous negative comments I attempted to download. After four failed attempts gave up.

Eraser problems

I'm sorry to hear about your problems with Eraser. I think I may have found a solution to the problem on the Eraser forum here http://bbs.heidi.ie/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=6014&hilit=fill Eraser works by creating files filled with random characters to overwrite deleted files on your hard disk. It appears that sometimes is not able to delete those files properly but you should be able to remove these files yourself. I hope this solves the problem Kind regards Tim
