Open Office 2007 and 2010 files in Office 2000, XP and 2003
Open and save the latest Office files in earlier versions
Office 2007 was a milestone because Microsoft introduced a new file format for the first time since Office 97. This can cause problems if someone sends you a document made with either Office 2007 or 2010.
The answer is this compatibility pack. It is compatible with Office 2000, XP and 2003. Not only does it make it possible to open documents created in the new format but you can then save documents as well.
Installation is simple and no special steps are needed to open the files; simply double-click on them as you would with any other file.

.DOCX file won't open in Office 200 with CP installed!
I've just installed the CP pack for Office 2000 and although the .docx file format is showing in the list, it's not opening the .docx file! I get the message 'there was an error opening the file'. Is there an alternative method using Ofiice 2000 or should I just get a .docx reader programme?

Opening docx files
You may find it easier to open the documents in LibreOffice Writer and save them as Office 97 files if the Compatibility Pack isn't working. LibreOffice is a fairly big download but it is free. I use the Portable version from PortableApps.com as it won't make any lasting changes to your computer. Tim
