There are times when it is very useful to be able to create musical scores.

These include sending compositions to other musicians or as part of school work. Musescore can be used to record, edit and print MIDI music from a keyboard or other compatible instrument.

MIDI music is very versatile because the notes can be edited and used to produce musical notation as well as the audio. Musescore is a comprehensive editor for producing music in this way.

It places note heads in the right place automatically and draw beams (the lines horizontal lines that connect some notes together) that cross the bass and treble clefs.

Musescore is not restricted to melody instruments either as it can produce drum notation. This is different from melody instruments because different symbols are used to denote different drums.

The latest version, 0.9.5, now has a version for Mac OS X 10.4 and later and can create sound files from the scores in WAV, OGG and FLAC formats. A helpful tool for beginners is that notes out of the range of an instrument are marked in red. A full list can be found at on the New Features page.
