Inconsolata font

An attractive fixed-width font for text work

image-of-letters-in-the-incolsolata-font

Install inconsolata for any job that requires a fixed-space font

When editing jobs require a fixed-width font, it's normally Courier New that gets used. It works well enough, but it isn't very easy on the eyes, especially in long documents.

Inconsolata is a font that can be used in its place at no cost. It's an attractive sans serif font, with no flourishes on the ends of letters.

The download has a file ending of OTF. This can be installed using the normal Windows font manager. Click on the Start menu and then Control Panel. Switch to Classic view and then double-click on Fonts.

Click on the File menu and then Install New Font. Use the navigation controls at the bottom of the window to navigate to the folder containing the font. Left-click on it once when it appears and then click on OK.

It's similar to the Microsoft font Consolas.

download problem checked

I've just double checked the download from this page and it seems to be working fine. Maybe try another browser, and if that doesn't work click on the manufacturer name, Raph Levien, above to go straight to his website and download it from there. Hope that works Tim

Inconsolata font

Thanks for the reply, have tried 2 other browsers, IE8 & Google Chrome and have tried another download link-still no go. On installation continually get a message about file corruption. No problem with other downloads. Have now given up.

Inconsolata font

Have tried several more times to install this font in various ways other than suggested. Even tried downloading via Winrar Although it is an .otf file-I get an error message that it is not a valid font file in addition to the file being possibly corrupted! I have now totally given up-can live without it and it's hassle!

Doesn't download correctly with Opera 10 or Iron 3

Opera shows a page of raw code, Iron (chrome) acts as though nothing is happening. I suspect you have this coded for download with Internet Exploder, but many of us avoid that like the plague. Perhaps if it used the standard convention of being in a ZIP format?

Help updates

I'm sorry to hear you're still having problems, hopefully I can help clear things up. I've checked the download again, and it opens fine in the Windows XP font preview with no warnings of file corruption. The download page is not coded for any one browser. Chrome offers to download the file in the normal diaglogue at the bottom of the window. Firefox asks to open with the Windows Font viewer (which won't offer to install), so select save file instead. But you're right that Opera tries to open the font file rather than download it (I had the same thing once with a ~100Mb linux graphics card driver, amazed Opera didn't crash!). To get around this in Opera, click on the link for Raph Levien and use the link on his website instead. Right-click on the 'OpenType file' link beneath the image of the text and left-click on Save Linked Content As... Find a location for the file and click on Save. Double-clicking on the otf file in Windows XP shows a preview but won't install the font. You'll need to follow the instructions in the download review to install the font in Windows. Is everyone using Windows XP or are the other OS's being used in this thread? Kind regards Tim

No problems

Have downloaded and installed the font with no problems using Internet Explorer 7 and Windows XP + SP3, though did have to nudge the web page to get the download to start!

Bold letter l

I had no problems downloading or installing (on XP) but the font displays in Word with the lower case letter l (not the number 1) in Bold.

Inconsolata / Sertig fonts

I had no problem downloading and installing these fonts. I downloaded them to 'new folders' on the desktop, then dragged and dropped them into the fonts folder. Right click on "My Computer" - Explore - Windows - Fonts. Click on folder to open, then drag the font from desktop to folder. Installs and registers in Control Panel. Windows XP - SP3. IE7.
