Use the GPS in your Windows-based mobile phone while running or cycling
Track your progress using GPS and a Windows Phone
Most Windows based phones come with GPS and the Satsports Log app uses this to display your speed, distance travelled and altitude.
Installation is simple, either download the file to install via ActivSync or the Sync Centre or go the the Sports Log website on your device to download the cab file.
The main part of the display shows current speed along with average and max, distance with time and duration, and current altitude with distance travelled up and down.
It can change the measurement units used and enable the devices key lock to avoid key presses exiting the program.
There are several other information panes that can be displayed below this on big screens or selected on smaller screens. These include an elevation graph, route track, split times, location info and tool for taking photos with the GPS location included in the tags.
We found that it was quite resource heavy on our test device, an HP 914 with a 416Mhz ARM processor. It was quick to update the GPS information but it wasn't easy to switch to other apps. This won't be a problem if you're focused on the GPS. The time taken to lock onto the GPS satellites is up to the phone as well.
You don't necessarily have to have GPS built in, as most Windows Mobile devices can connect to a GPS receiver using Bluetooth.
The full version of the software costs £5 and will record data from the trip that can then be imported into Windows.
