Complete and popular Linux distribution
Install the latest Ubuntu on your computer
Ubuntu Linux is a very popular distribution ideal for both newcomers and seasoned Linux fans. It is easy to set up and comes with all of the software you are likely to need, including the Openoffice suite.
Much of the software included with Ubuntu will be immediately familiar, such popular open source web browser Firefox. F-spot handles organising and editing digital photos and Rhythmbox is the default media player. Emails are read using the Evolution software; more like Microsoft Outlook than Mozilla Thunderbird it can also organise appointments and contacts.
Should you want any software that is not installed automatically during installation there is a very good Add Programs utility that downloads the latest versions automatically.
Ubuntu 9.10 features a redesigned, faster boot and login experience, a revamped audio framework, and improved 3G broadband connectivity, all of which contribute to a first-class user experience.

ISO Image Does Not Work
Does not install. Does not run from CD. Oh well, I suppose I'm going back to Ubuntu 8.04 again. Altogether a big disappointment, another example of why Linux cannot get a firm foothold in mainstream computing.

ISO Image problems
Hi Sorry to hear about your problems. Have you used software like Active@ ISO Burner to make the install CD rather than copying the ISO file onto it. Download it from www.computeractive.co.uk/2169254 Alternatively give the WUBI installer a go, it's much easier to use as you can start the install from within Windows, and it offers a much easier way to uninstall ubuntu Kind regards Tim

Does not seem to work for me.
Followed the instructions to the letter. Downloaded the iso image and burned the iso file to a CD using CDBurnerXP. Tried to run "Try Ubuntu without making any changes to your computer". Proceeds satisfactorily to the point where it displays a DOS-like screen but then seems to get stuck on the line "Starting bluetooth". Checked the CD integrity which is reported ok. Am I doing something wrong?

ubuntu 8.10 failure
i downloaded ubuntu as per instructions in isssue 286.the iso burner did not work properly at first ,so used nero to burn bootable cd that worked but when i booted up with cd it went straight into dos it finished with the words caldera dr-dos 7.03 [dr-dos]a:\ and thats where it stayed.going into the drive e:\ the files are there but i cannot move them.Back again to the desktop this time the iso burner worked so i burned another cd ,this did not work tried to boot up but almost brought system to standstill till windows took over . have checked the cd's the files are there but trying to open them takes ages and they still slow the system right down and still it did not work ,right clicking to open the file tries to open explorer instead the same applies if i try to run it from the desktop tries to run explorer and fails.my first venture into the Linux arena what a dissappointment.

Try Wubi
If anyone is having trouble with installing Ubuntu,I suggest trying the wubi installer. That way there is no need to worry about partioning the drive etc.I have an Acer dual core pc that will not let any linux distro install bar Freespire 2.I used wubi and have no problems at all dual booting between Vista and Ubuntu.Hope that helps .

Try a Puppy
I got fed up with Ubuntu. Constantly seemed to suddenly stop with no explanation. Found Linux Puppy 3.0 which worked straightaway and even found drivers for my BTVOYAGER pcmcia card. No other Linux has managed this. Must say that Puppy 4.0 doesn't work for me. Cannot find driver. I always work from CD. Best of luck

Ubuntu 9.10 reports a hd failure?
I have installed 9.10 on my computer twice and it told me/is telling me in both instances that my hard drive is about to fail? Is there any truth to this, since I last used Ubuntu a week ago and my hard drive is showing no sign of degradation in performance.
