An ideal Linux distribution for Linux beginners
Starting Linux is simple with PCLinuxOS
Unlike many Linux distributions, PCLinuxOS is firmly focussed on desktop computing, with plenty to help the newcomer to Linux.
This download is an ISO image of a CD, that must be used with software such as Active@ ISO Burner to create the PCLinuxOS disc.
This disc is what is known as a LiveCD, start the computer with the disc in the drive and PCLinux OS will load without touching the hard disk and any existing operating systems.
Installation is very straightforward and PCLinuxOS takes advantage of the excellent DiskDrake tool. This shows a graphical representation of the partitions on the hard disk, making it easier to install to the correct partition.
PCLinuxOS uses the KDE desktop rather than GNOME, so it will be much more familiar to Windows users. A GNOME version is being worked on at the moment. All the usual programs you would expect to find are present including Firefox, Openoffice and Thunderbird.
One notable difference from Mandriva is the program used to install extra software. We found this much easier to use and includes useful software such as graphics drivers.
Unlike some other distributions, PCLinuxOS can play back proprietary multimedia files (including wma, mp3, mpg, rm, mov) without having to install extra software. DVD playback software is not included but can be installed with the standard installation tool.
