Simple clear advice in plain English

Import text from documents with FreeOCR

FreeOCR can convert photos and scans of documents into editable text

openocr can read the text in documents

Import text from photos or a scanner with OpenOCR

Having to type complete documents into a computer is time consuming, even for fast typists. FreeOCR takes an image from a scanner or an image or PDF file from the computer and recognises the text in it.

Installation is simple. This download is only 156KB but will then download the latest version of the software. This should be less than 10MB, the space listed in the System Requirements.

FreeOCR is easy to use. The main tasks have icons in the top toolbar. This includes loading an image from a scanner using the standard Windows scanner interface or from a file.

There are icons down the left side of the program for selecting the area of the page to recognise.

Once text has been recognised it can be saved as a text or Word file, or copied into the clipboard.

There are features that are missing compared to commercial scanning products such as ABBYY. Only one area of text can be selected for recognition. Getting the text out is simple enough that this shouldn't waste too much time even though it still adds extra steps.

Where is it...?

I've tried several times to acquire this software - at different times of the day. All that happens is the message: 'Bandwidth Limit Exceeded' appears. Does that mean FreeOCR or Computeractive are at fault?

Server limit exceeded

It seems the download has been a little too popular - the download site (not hosted by Computeractive) has been limited by the hosting company because too many downloads have been requested. Try the download later - we'll see if there's an alternative download location in the meantime.

Installer seems to be corrupted

I had the same problems as Howard but Googling FreeOCR directed me to a different server. I then got the same problem as Colin Brown!!

Cannot install

I get 404 error [Reply from Computeractive] It seems the download file is currently unavailable from the FreeOCR site. We hope this is a temporary glitch, so please try again in a day or two.

There is a disturbance in the Force! The 'initial' download installer is non-executable from a mobile device... Well, my mobile device anyway! (LG Viewty) Ü
