Replace the Taskbar with ObjectDock for a more graphical interface
Give Windows a Mac-style dock with ObjectDock
The Taskbar has been part of Windows for a long time, but there are alternatives. ObjectDock from Stardock is one of the better ones and it recreates the Mac Dock.
Installation is simple and ObjectDock then appears above the Taskbar. The icons show frequently used programs and an arrow underneath one shows when a program is running. You'll probably want to hide or move the Taskbar to get the most benefit from ObjectDock and this is possible through the ObjectDock Settings page.
Adding items to ObjectDock is as simple as dragging and dropping an icon from the Desktop or Start Menu on to it. Right-clicking on an icon opens a quick menu for both it and ObjectDock.
As hiding the Taskbar also hides the Start Menu, you might want to install Launchy as a complimentary program to ObjectDock. It allows you to search installed programs with a keyboard shortcut. Download Launchy here.
There is a premium version of ObjectDock that costs US$20. This version can have multiple docks on screen at once, have folder view tabs and tabbed docks.
