Play and convert music and video files on your computer
VLC is a very capable media player that can play a wide variety of music and video files, including DVD discs
VLC Media player is been media player we recommend on both Windows and Linux. It is simple to use but has the ability to play just about any format of music and video and can convert media as well.
The latest version, VLC 2 codenamed Twoflower, adds some useful new features. Performance has been improved when running on multi-core computers as well as the ability to use the graphics card. The range of supported formats has been expanded as well as filters used to enhance videos. Support for RealVideo and Real Format has been improved.

Installation is easy and there are options to include plugins for Mozilla Firefox and the Windows Context menus so you can start playing a file by right-clicking on it in Windows Explorer. It can also set itself to be the default player for different kinds of media.
There is also an option to delete the preferences and cache of the previous version. This is a useful option only if you are reinstalling to fix a problem with the old installation.
Once installed VLC can play back DVDs and input from TV tuners. Audio and video file formats include: MPEG, AVI, ASF, WMV, WMA, MP4, MOV, 3GP (often used by mobile phones), OGG, Real, WAV, DTS, AAC, Raw DV, FLAC, FLV (Flash video files as used by Youtube, MXF and MIDI).
VLC is easy to use despite all of the different tools. There are plenty of effects that can be applied to files including a graphic equaliser and spatialiser.
Converting tracks is still not as simple as some alternatives such Freemake Video Converter or Audio Converter.
VLC is also available as a portable app.

Program blocking
Hi, Can I just check whether you mean that VLC is being identified as malicious software or whether the security software is displaying a warning that it wants access to the internet. The latter message is to do with the computer firewall, the software that makes sure only allowed programs are given access. This message often appears for legitimate apps. Kind regards Tim
