Plan redecoration and building projects with Sweet Home 3D

Sweet Home 3D is a powerful program for planning home improvements and redecoration. It has a traditional top-down plan view that is reproduced in 3D underneath.

Installation is simple but do be aware that the computer must have Java installed and have 3D hardware installed. Click here to install Java.

The Sweet Home 3D interface is in four parts. There are lists of available furniture and the furniture being used in the project. The rest of the screen is divided between the plan and 3D views. The sizes of these panes can be adjusted.

It is easy to get started with Sweet Home 3D, although we did have to check the help file to discover that creating walls does not create a room within the walls. This has to be done separately. On a more positive note, there are plenty of tips for the different tools. This included the answer for quickly making rooms and walls. It is possible to add walls to a room by double-clicking on it.

Items can be stacked on each other so it's possible to put a potted plant on top of a table or desk if required. More furniture can be downloaded from the Sweet Home 3D download page or the list of other 3D models made by Sweethome 3D users.

The preferences allow the choice between metric and imperial units and defaults for wall thickness.
