Free and ideal for converting video to watch on smartphones and portable devices
The Hamster Free Video Converter interface is easy to use
The many video formats used by different portable devices can often be confusing, and it's frustrating when a video that works fine with one refuses to work with another. Hamster video converter is a useful utility that can convert videos into the right format, and it has presets for different devices so you don't need to know the exact specifcation to use.
Installation is straightforward, though it lauches the Hamster Soft Facebook page in your browser in an effort to get you to like the page. Having said that, Hamster Soft appears to be quite active on their page answering questions.
The Microsoft .NET Framework is required to run the software. This should be included with Windows Vista and 7. If you don't have it, there should be an option for it in Windows Update, or you can visit the .NET Framework page on the Microsoft website.
The Video Converter interface is easy to use. Videos can be dragged onto it or added with the add button. More than one video can be converted at a time, which is a useful time saver.
Having selected the videos, the next step is to select the format to convert to. There are presets for lots of different devices ordered by manufacturer or you can select the correct format yourself. A slider is used to select the quality of the converted video. Remember that higher quality means a larger file.
After that, the only thing left to do is to click on the Convert button.
There are lots of video converters around these days but Hamster Free Video Converter is easy to use and very helpful with its selection of presets.

Article amended
Hi, Sorry I should have explained better, this download is ~400KB but it then downloads a further 4MB

Is this really freeware?
I note the downloaded 400k file all has the word 'shareware' in it. There's a report it also tries to install an unwanted toolbar - I cannot verify this as I've blocked access to prevent programs like this from 'phoning home' when installed. The magazine article does not make clear the dependency on the .Net framework either, which would be useful.

response to Kevin
Hi Kevin, I used it for a few days and there was no mention of any shareware limitations. Regarding the toolbar installation, it's a common thing with freeware software. As it's normally easy to deselect this option, I don't regard it as a big problem. I would always report on anything I thought was disingenuous; in fact I probably wouldn't include it in the site or mag at all. Kind regards Tim
