Get a detailed list of the hardware and software on your computer

If you consult someone for PC help they will usually want to see a list of the hardware and software on your computer. Most IT enthusiasts will have a detailed list, but the rest of us probably have no idea. System Information for Windows will scan a computer to create these lists for you.

Installation is simple though it does include the option to install extra software at the time. This step may trigger spyware or malicious software warnings. Our experience is that this software is benign; it scans the computer to ensure it doesn't offer something already installed. There is no default option so there is no risk of accidentally installing software.

Starting System Information for Windows will prompt a question from User Account Control. This isn't a great surprise as it requires some deep-level access to the computer.

The report is well laid out with a tree view in the left-hand column that can be expanded or collapsed to make it more manageable.

It is certainly comprehensive and includes important information in the hardware section that can help track down problems such as driver versions. Outdated or incorrect drivers can cause all kinds of problems so this is helpful.

The software section is also comprehensive. One option we particulary liked is the report on licence keys from software. This is useful if you can't find the documentation that came with it.

It can also list installed updates for Windows as well as any that are missing.

The specifications can be exported from System Information for Windows in a variety of formats including HTML and CSV.
