With a wealth of options, Google Earth is a great way to explore the world from the comfort of your home
Google Earth is free to download and contains a huge amount of information
Google Earth has been around for quite some time now and the latest updates have made it even more useful.
Much like Google Maps, Google Earth allows you to explore the world by searching for what you're looking for. There are options to turn on a huge number of layers. These let you view current weather, historical maps, walking trails, photos, videos, trivia and much more besides.
Several cities now feature 3D models of buildings too and 360 panoramas of interesting (and sometimes very uninteresting) views are also displayed. The amount of information available on Google Earth can be a bit daunting and it is entirely possible to spend hour upon hour getting lost in.
That said, the Earth is a pretty big place to get lost in. However, if all that gets a bit too local, you can also explore the Moon, Mars or the stars in the night sky...
