Photofiltre is a capable and free photo editor
Every so often digital photos don't come out quite as they were meant to. Photofiltre is an image editor that can correct problems with photos and create more artistic projects.
Installation is simple and there is an option to install the Ask toolbar at the same time. This can be deselected or uninstalled later without affecting Photofiltre.
Changes to photos can be made using filters that range from basic adjustments to brightness and contrast to more artistic effects that convert a photo into a watercolour or oil painting.
It's a shame that Photofiltre doesn't support image layers. Although layers can be a little off-puting to beginners, they are a good way of making changes to images without losing the original.
PhotoFiltre can apply filters to specific parts of an image but it does so using selections. There are several different shapes that can be used to make the selections, there is a magic lasso effect that selects areas of similar colours and there is a freehand tool.
Finally there is a photoMasque tool that uses a greyscale image as a mask for a filter. It's good for the more artistic effects but some way of drawing this onto images would make it even better.
Photofiltre is a good image editor that costs nothing to try. More advanced users might want to try Paint.NET or The GIMP.
