Keep files synchronised across folders and computers on a home network
We are quite familiar these days with programs that synchronise files between computers and the internet such as Dropbox, Ubuntu One or SpiderOak. As useful as they are, they incur charges when moving beyond the basic storage option. DSynchronize is a very useful alternative that can be used for synchronising files between folders, including network shares.
Installation is simple. This download can either be run and installed in a folder of your choosing (including USB keys or external hard disks), or integrated into the Portable Apps launcher. The latter does offer the option of starting automatically, which is very useful for using DSynchronise with the minimum of fuss.
DSynchronize is also simple to use with all of the controls in a single window. The top part of the window is used to set up the pairs of folders, sources and destinations.
As well as selecting folders, it is possible to set up filters on folders to include or exclude particular file types. This is useful if there are large files that you don't want to synchronise such as ISO disc images.
There are several different synchronisation options including only copying newer files and bidirectional synchronisation. It can create folders and shut down the computer when it has finished. The biggest section of the window at the bottom shows the results of the file operations.
DSynchonize is at its most powerful after an ordinary synchronisation when the real time synch option is enabled. All the time this option is enabled DSynchronize will monitor the folders for changes and update the different folders so that the most recent version of a document is present in both.
Finally, another important feature is the ability to keep backups of changes. Five is the maximum and default setting.
