Mix drinks like a pro with Mixology

If you're confused by the world of cocktails leaves, Mixology can help you discover and make a wider range of drinks.

The app is free to download and install from the Apple App Store. It is written for the iPhone so it will appear quite small on the iPad unless you enable the 2x zoom. As you might want to have the iPad propped up while making the drinks, the larger size is probably a good thing.

The home screen has a selection of cocktails and a search box for finding recipies. This updates as you enter text.

The recipes are well laid out with an icon to show the sort of glass to use, a list of ingredients and the instructions themselves. Sometimes a little background about the drink is included too.

We also appreciated the fact that when ingredients are in yellow text, they can be tapped on to reveal more information about them. For example, we didn't know what Lillet is, as used in the Vesper cocktail shown above.

The cabinet screen is used to list all of the drinks and mixers you have at home. It is possible to select entire categories. Once you have filled out this section, the blue search can be used to find cocktails using what you have in your drink cabinet.

The Bartending Guide is useful if you are new to mixing cocktails and want more help understanding the terminology of this skill. There are also descriptions of the different glasses and tools used to make cocktails. It includes suggestions of the basic drinks and mixers to have in your drinks cabinet.

Helpfully you can select either US or metric unit types to be shown in recipies.

Although this app is free, it displays adverts while you are using it. There is the option to upgrade to the Mixologist app for 70p. This lets you save your own recipes and adds a random recipe button.
