A great app to help you find some healthier meal options
The app is sponsored and can be downloaded free of charge
The BBC Good Food website is great place to go for culinary inspiration and now there is an app that focusses on some of its more health-conscious offerings.
Good Food Healthy Recipes is sponsored by a well-known toothpaste company – the consequences of which can get a bit tiresome – but this does mean it can be downloaded free. The app itself has an excellent interface for finding recipes and then looking through the step-by-step cooking guides or seeing a list of ingredients that need buying.
By only focussing on the healthier food choices recipes are a bit limited, but there are still over 175 ideas included. All the important information about calories, fats, saturated fats and the like are easy to spot.
Another useful feature is the ability to find recipes by using either search or categories. Tapping breakfast, starters, mains, puddings, soups and the like will all result in relevant results being displayed. Alternatively, a quick search for chicken, pork or noodles will turn up applicable recipes. If something looks good, it can be added to a list of favourites and found easily at a later date.
The ‘Picks' menu option has a slick interface for scrolling through some of the tastiest recipes on offer. Hidden behind ‘Extras' is a list of recipes on the favourites list and also some handy video guides, including advice on how to prepare a whole fish and how best to freeze fruit and vegetables.
Unfortunately, this app felt somewhat scarce on extra features. What's here is great, but it needs more features.
