Windows Phone 7 users rejoice! There's a useful app for your phone
Follow every Olympic and Paralympic event with the 2012 results app
Windows Phone 7 isn't well endowed with apps, so it was a pleasant surprise that the official Olympics results app is available for Microsoft's bronze-medal platform. Unfortunately, that pleasure soon disappeared on investigation.
On first impressions the app looks great, adopting the Metro interface with large tiles and sideways swipes to move between menus and sections. But while it looks okay, it certainly doesn't work okay.
The Live panel didn't work properly and we couldn't scroll down to view all the events currently taking place. No matter how hard we tried, it wouldn't scroll down. A tendency to not load content or randomly crash brought further annoyance.
For the uninitiated, results are displayed in a basic and confusing way. While this is fine for something like tennis, which is easy to understand, it became confusing for events like fencing and equestrian eventing.
The main purpose of this app, aside from following live results, is to work out what's on when. This worked well as we could easily check schedules, but setting reminders proved more bothersome. Rather than tapping on a symbol of a clock, say, which would make sense, you have to hold down on the sport or event in question to view options. Still, it does work and is a handy way of making sure you don't miss any events.
There is some useful information hidden away – rules of all the sports, venue information, news and pictures as well as results and schedules. Unfortunately, most of it is so well hidden that it isn't worth looking for.
