Keep files up to date across computers and the cloud with SugarSync

The first thing to like about SugarSync is that it is not limited to synchronising files only found in a single nominated folder. Sometimes it is helpful to keep folders separate in this way but it often adds an extra layer of folders. Adding a folder to a SugarSync account is as simple as dragging and dropping it on to the SugarSync app or selecting it as you would in other programs.

Sugarsync integrates into Windows Explorer so files and folders can be added or shared from the right-click. This menu can also be used to view previous versions of the file. Keeping multiple versions of files can be a real life saver if a mistake is saved to disk.

Small icons are added to folders and files to show that they have been copied to the online storage. This is a useful way of checking that it is working.

Folders can be shared online, either with specific contacts or publically. Public links can be accessed by anyone with the correct link but private shares require that the recipient also be a member of SugarSync.

Registration for SugarSync is free and comes with 5GB of online storage space. This is fairly standard across the alternatives and provides enough space for a working folder. There are several plans offering more space including 30Gb for US$5 per month or US$50.

Extra space can be earnt by recommending the service to other people with an extra 500MB for each person who signs up.

SugarSync is available for several different platforms as well as Windows including Mac, iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows Mobile and others. Sadly there is no Linux version. SugarSync say this is due to lack of demand.

It is possible to adust the upload speed, just in case it interferes with other network activity. It's certainly easy to adjust but with just Low, Medium and High it is quite basic.
