Installation is simple through the Google Play Store and there is no particular effort required to set up the app.
There is an option to enter login details for Magnatune. They currently operate with a monthly subscription that gives access to downloading any albums from their catalogue as well as listening to music through the website. While we were testing this app we didn't have any problems listening to music without an active account.
It is possible that this may change. The online player used to be open but now plays an advert for a Magnatune subscription repeatedly after a while. It may be that this app will go the same way, but until then it's a good way to explore the available music.
Navigating the app is simple. The home screen has links for listing the music by artist, album or genre. Tapping an album makes it appear in the player and there are the usual controls.
Unfortunately there is no way to add tracks to playlists so you will have to listen to complete albums.
As this is a streaming app, we recommend only using this over wireless unless you have a generous data allowance.
Magnatune is a bit of mixed bag with some albums that we don't really care for. Classical artists are in for a treat with albums from the likes of American Baroque and American Bach soloists for classical buffs as well as General Fuzz for electronica fans and Drop Trio for jazz fans.
