HMV will be switching off its current music downloads site from 26 January to make way for a new one.

The music site has warned customers to make backups of previous purchases because although their purchase history will show tracks until 2 February, they will be unable to access them again after this date.

“Over the next few months, we’ll be launching a brand new downloads site with an even bigger catalogue and loads of improved features. It’s all top secret at the moment, but we promise you’ll be the first to hear as soon as it goes live.”

People are told to sign into My Account on the website, then click on their purchase history. Once there they should select the mp3 tracks they want to back-up and click “re-download music”.

The download manager gives the option to choose where to save the tracks which will be automatically transferred to the chosen destination.

HMV said customers who have any questions can contact it by phoning 0207 467 1109 (option 3) or send it an email digitalservice@hmv.co.uk.

A CD is for life, not just for Christmas

This is precisely why digital downloads suck - because you no longer OWN what you pay for, you're just RENTING it for as long as the provider makes it available to you. People that believe CDs only contain one or two good tracks are just not listening to good enough musicians with the skills to maintain the quality of the music across the length of an entire album - but there are plenty who can so the answer is to stop listening to rubbish music. CDs don't need to be backed up and can be bought cheaper online than downloading track-by-track whereas digital downloads just let the consumer sell their rights and freedoms down the river.
