Corrections to errors in issues 94 through to 99 of Computer Active

Body Copy:In issue 98 we covered a workshop on creating a flexi-timesheet in Microsoft Excel. Unfortunately, there was an error in this, resulting in hours being calculated, but not minutes. Many thanks to several readers for pointing this out and providing a number of solutions. Rob Hawkins, who wrote this workshop has had his wages duly cut. Here's the solution:-

Step1

Select the cells for the start and end times. Click on the Format menu and choose cells. From the dialogue box that appears, the format type for these cells should be 1:30PM. Change this to 13:30 and click on OK to return to your spreadsheet. The times displayed in these cells will now be displayed in the 24-hour clock format and will need to be entered like this (enter 5.30pm as 17:30.

Step2

Select the first cell that calculates hours worked (E6 in our example), delete it, then enter the formula =C6-B6-D6. Press Return on the keyboard. The calculation will be incorrect, but change the format of the cell to the 24-hour clock (as in Step 1). Make sure it's correct, then copy the calculation down the screen (see Step 5 of the related workshop in issue 98 for copying a formula).

Step3

The figure for total hours worked will be incorrect. Select this cell, click on the Format menu and choose Cells. From the dialogue box that appears, make sure the Number tab is selected, the Time category is chosen on the left and 37:30:55 is selected under Type. Click on OK to return to your spreadsheet and make sure the total hours figure is correct.

Step4

We need to convert the total hours to a number, so that we can calculate the amount of hours over/owing. To do this, we'll divide the total hours worked by 01:00. Select cell F1 and enter the value 01:00 (using a colon). Select the cell to the right of total hours worked (F11 in our example) and enter the formula =F10/F1. Press Return to complete the calculation. Change the formatting of this cell to a Number (under Category) with two decimal places. You can now enter a value for total hours contracted to work and a calculation to work out the total hours owing/over. The result will allow you to work out overtime pay (multiply your overtime rate by the total hours owing/over).

Other corrections

In issue 97, it looks as if a step has been missed out of the Workshop Speed up your Computer on pages 49-50. However the steps were numbered incorrectly and the Workshop works as it is.

For those readers who are having trouble with the downloads in issue 97 such as Webcams tourist, it is because we made an embarrassing error and printed the wrong URL for the magazine. Canny readers will know the correct address is www.computeractive.co.uk.

In issue 96 we misprinted the URL for the Growl website. The correct address is www.securityandstandards.com. However, the second URL, www.secstan.co.uk is correct but despite this we have had a couple of letters from readers who couldn't access the website using this address. We put the problem to Growl and the company said if anyone continues to have a difficulties to please email support@securityandstandards.com. It also aims to put right our mistake by seeing if it can nab the name of the misspelled URL as well, so in future you may also be able to access the site three ways.

In issue 95, in the feature on Mouse Upgrades on page 42, the telephone number for the Kensington Pocket Mouse Optical is 0800 252 359.

In issue 95, the article Burning Desire on page 64 the Workshop for fitting internal drives is in issue 86 and not issue 84 as stated in the article.

On page 22 of issue 94, the contact number for LG Electronics is missing a number and should read 0870 6075544.
