New iPad-rival runs Android 2.2, plays Flash video and will be available from September
Korean electronics giant Samsung has announced its first Android-powered tablet computer, the Galaxy Tab.
Clearly aimed at Apple's iPad, the Galaxy Tab has a seven-inch touchscreen and runs the Android 2.2 operating system more commonly found on smartphones.
Like the more expensive iPad models it can surf the web via Wifi or a 3G or HSDPA mobile phone connection. Unlike the iPad, however, it can use the same phone connection to send and receive calls and text messages.
Unlike the iPad it will be able to play Flash content on web pages, including Flash video of the type used by Computeractive TV.
In a statement Samsung described the Galaxy Tab as "the first of the company’s tablet devices, representing a new category of mobile products for Samsung."
The device will be available from September, with prices yet to be announced.
