Third prize went to Anis Rahaman, who attends London South Bank University, for his entry 'Renewable energy'. This detailed how grid computing can help the national energy grid to integrate renewable energy in the current power network.
Because the calibre of the finalists was so high, a special commendation was awarded to Nubia Gill, University of Dundee, for her entry 'Lifestyle monitoring system to improve the well-being of the elderly'.
The judges said this had great potential in using grid computing for informing social policy.
Gokop Goteng now receives a six-week paid Grid Computing Now! project internship next summer which will be hosted by Intellect.
He is also eligible to attend the Microsoft European Research and Innovation day held in Brussels, wins a year’s free membership to the British Computer Society, as well as receiving an Xbox 360.
His university will also receive a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Standard 10 CALs and Microsoft Compute Cluster Server.
Zacharias Joubert has won a notebook computer, an opportunity to utilise the e-Science National Grid Service to implement a prototype solution, and free membership to the British Computer Society for one year.
Anis Rahaman has been awarded Microsoft Visual Studio.NET Professional, Microsoft Office Professional and free membership to the British Computer Society for one year.
