Storage restricted to 10Mb
Internet service provider (ISP) Virgin.net has launched a web-based email service that is free to use for existing Virgin customers.
The ISP, recently sold by Richard Branson to cable company NTL, will offer basic functions to begin with, including 10Mb of storage space and an online address book. Virgin hopes to add the ability to send emails direct to mobile phones next year.
The web-based email market has become fiercely competitive following the announcement that search engine giant Google planned to offer users 1Gb of free online storage - many times the space offered by rivals.
Lycos, Yahoo and Microsoft's Hotmail all followed suit to varying degrees in the months that followed, providing an online storage boon for consumers.
