UK to see TV, DVDs and games in 3D - from autumn 2010
Toshiba has announced the launch of a range of televisions that can convert standard 2D content into 3D images.
The company's Cell TV range will upscale television programmes, movies from DVD and console games into 3D.
Toshiba said the TVs will have 10 times the processing power of high-end gaming PCs and include Wifi and a home entertainment server capable of streaming content at 1080p resolution.
Cell TVs will also have a 1 Terabyte hard disk built in so consumers can store music, photos and movies for streaming to other entertainment devices in the home. They will also have an integrated camera to enable people to make video calls, along with the ability to share photos.
Cell TV is launching in the US now but UK consumers will have to wait until autumn 2010 as Toshiba hasn't decided on the complete set of features it will sell here.
"“We are still engaged in extensive market research to find out which of the features are key in Europe to satisfy high-end consumer needs,” Toshiba said in a statement. No pricing plans have been announced for the UK.
As well as converting to 3D, Cell TVs will be able to improve the quality of low-resolution video, such as from YouTube, to fit a large screen.
Speaking at the annual Consumer Electronics Show industry shindig in Las Vegas, Toshiba said sales of LCD televisions in the 32 inch and 60 inch+ categories had exceeded 2009 predictions despite the economic downturn.
