Yahoo hands out website gongs

A website that gives advice to people moving house has won the People’s Choice accolade in Yahoo’s Find of The Year awards.

Moveme, which creates free personalised calendars with step by step house moving lists, received 6,000 votes.

The site was also awarded The Best Innovative Website by the judging panel, made up of a range of people in the technology industry.

Other categories included in the awards, now in its sixth year, included travel, educational, ethnical and weird and wonderful.

There is also a Best Social Networking Website category. However, those who think the likes of Facebook may have been a contender are barking up the wrong tree. Doggy Snapps, which was set up by charity Dogs' Trust and lets owners create profiles for their dogs, won this title.

The Best Travel Website was awarded to World Reviewer, which the judges thought inspired travellers to try something different by listing events happening in the world and telling users about travel experiences in different countries.

Travel was also a favourite theme in the Best Educational Website category, which went to Friends Abroad, a language learning community. With users in over 200 countries, speaking over 80 languages, the judges said it was a good way to improve foreign language skills.

The World Food Organisation won the Best Charitable Website for its online Free Rice game, set up to test people's vocabulary and converting correct answers to rice donations for the Third World.

Best Ethical Website went to The Nag, a site that encourages people to become environmentally friendly. A online monthly step-by-step guide includes advice on how to switch to green energy sources or how to recycle an old mobile phone.

Being green was a running theme - The Best Shopping Website was awarded to Nigel’s Eco Store, which sells environmentally friendly products and gifts all tested by its staff. Products range from solar-powered electric shavers to an energy saving kettle.

Faces in Places, a blog that encourages people to send in their pictures of 'faces' they have found in unusual places, such as in the sand or on food, understandably won the Weird and Wonderful Website award.
