7 Digital's catalogue and technology will be used to sell MP3 music and ebooks
Music retailer HMV has purchased a 50 per cent stake in the online music shop 7 Digital.
It will use 7 Digital's MP3 music sales technology and catalogue of over six million songs for its online music store and to sell ebooks via the Waterstone's website.
7 Digital, which sells music from EMI, Sony, Warner and Universal as MP3 files – without digital rights management – in the UK will continue to sell music through its other partnerships with services such as Last.fm and Spotify.
HMV Chief Executive Simon Fox said 7 Digital was "the best partner... to help us become a major player in the market for legally downloaded entertainment ".
The company paid £7.7 million for the stake.
