Simple clear advice in plain English

Scan your way to the web.

Not so long ago, scanning software did just that and not much else. Now we're spoilt for choice, especially if you want to turn printed documents into web pages.

ScanSoft's Paper Converter (£40) works with Microsoft FrontPage 2000 and allows you to scan documents and convert them to web pages - complete with pictures and tables - with just three clicks. It can even create a table of contents to help navigate web pages.

For £99, Caere's OmniPage Pro 10 Scan Suite Plus provides a similar facility via its OmniPage Web Personal Edition. It also includes the OmniPage Pro 10 OCR software to turn scanned pages into editable PC text files, the PhotoSuite IIISE picture-editing program and NetObjects Fusion 4 web design program. There's also a copy of PageKeeper Pro included to help organise and search the documents that you've scanned, plussoftware Post-It-style notes, for writing on-screen memos. The £99 price is only valid for upgrades - so you'll need some OCR software, even if it's a cut-down version that came with your scanner, otherwise the full price is £495.
