Scan barcodes on the go and add them to online shopping orders
Tesco is adding a barcode scanning feature to its iPhone app to allow people to scan grocery items while they are out and about and add them to a home delivery order.
The supermarket said the app will enable people to instantly update their online shopping basket when they run out of a certain item.
The app works by using the iPhone’s built-in camera to scan the barcode of a product, which then tells the Tesco online database to add it to your virtual basket.
Laura Wade-Gery, Tesco.com and Tesco Direct chief executive, said: "We're always looking for ways to make life easier for customers and for busy mums in particular.
"The barcode scanner will make online ordering much quicker for those who have an iPhone. Customers can simply scan the barcode of grocery products stocked by Tesco while on the go and add them into their online shopping basket.
"This is the perfect solution for iPhone lovers that are always forgetting to add items to their shopping list or haven't the time to write one."
Customers who have already downloaded the previous version of the Tesco Groceries application will automatically receive an update notification to enable the barcode scanning feature. The app is free and can be found on the iTunes website.
Other UK supermarkets also offer smartphone apps for both iPhone and Android, including home delivery service Ocado. Sai nsbury's app has details of store opening hours and promotions. Waitrose has an app featuring recipes, cooking guides and store information.
